 Designer of the Sunbeam - Alfred Westmacott, M.I.N.A.

Westmacott designed the Yarmouth One Design  
In 1921 he designed the Seaview Sailing Club Mermaid (LOA 24ft 6ins., LWL 17ft 3ins., 6 ft beam 3 ft 3ins draught, 250 sq. ft.)
In 1922, prompted by Captain Basil Lubbock, Westmacott designed "an improved Mermaid" ...  
The Solent Sunbeam (LOA 26ft 5ins., LWL 17ft 6ins., 6ft beam, 3ft 9ins draught, 300 sq. ft)


Between 1922 -1938,  Woodnutt & Co.  built 39 of Alfred Westmacott's Sunbeam One Design  
Woodnutt’s move to Warsash (opposite Fawley). Their Hamble yard was destroyed by fire, forcing closure.



 SUNBEAM One Design - originally to be raced by two crew (today, two or three, including helm)

LOA 26ft. 5ins.,  LWL 17ft. 6ins.,  Beam 6ft, Draught 3ft. 9ins.,  1.85 tons,  [3-tons, Thames measure]
Sail Area 300 sq.ft., plus spinnaker (Solent) or   "Kitty Gear". (Falmouth Sunbeams boom out the jib)
