On-line resources
An increasing number of on-line resources are becoming available. This page is to illustrate same, especially where associated information helps to provide background information of interest to readers and related to Sunbeams or their owners' familiy history.
For example, the
Hon. Evelyn Boscawen recently purchased and restored
Maranui. His family has a long and most interesting history, some of which is illustrated by news cuttings included in pages on this site. Where appropriate, references are abbreviated, (hopefully remaining accurate!) and of as much interest to Sunbeam-orientated site visitors as casual, or chance visitors with specific interest in local, maritime or familiy history.
The British Library Newspaper Library has commenced digitisation of selected microfilmed newspapers. At this stage, although 40,000 pages of five newspapers were scanned from microfilm, the purpose was to trial some extraordinary OCR software which has proved capable of intelligent and (97%) accurate character recognition. For the first time, readers can view a newspaper page, select shaded articles, word-search articles, headers, subtiles and even advertisements, then preview the hits and see an image of each 'hit' - a boon which overcomes fears of misinterpretation by OCR software.
At the moment, the
British Library site offering test searches is quite limited, with five publications from selected years bewteen 1880 and 1922. The trial was intended to illustrate how news was reported by different publications covering identical periods during which there were significant events.

My particular interest is to see if micropayments billed to user's telephone accounts could be the appropriate mechanism of cost-efficient, multi-currency billing for viewing or downloaing content
at nominal, photocopy rates, to generate sustainable revenue for information providers. If this proves to be the case, then the cost of digitising vast untapped resources of news (textual and graphc data) could be capitalised,
creating an accessible resource to a worldwide audience.
